Abstract
We synthesize pentafluorophenyl (PFP) ester based polymers as reactive precursors and use them to prepare copolymers for applications as antifouling coatings and fluorescent polymers for bioimaging. In the first example, we prepare copolymers with both fouling-resistant and fouling-release properties by grafting poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) onto a poly(pentafluorophenyl acrylate) (PPFPA) precursor. By tuning the side-chain composition, the antifouling performance of the coating can be optimized to target foulants of different sizes. In the second example, PPFPA is used to create fluorescent polymers by grafting NIR dye molecules. At an optimized dye loading, spherical nanoparticles with enhanced fluorescent properties are achieved. Improved fluorescence signal detection following cellular internalization is demonstrated through in vitro imaging.
