Abstract

Exposure to neutron and X-ray radiation presents significant challenges in space travel and X-ray diagnostics. This study introduces a novel polyethylene-boron nitride-bismuth iodide (PE/BNNs/BiI) composite film, fabricated via hot pressing. designed for efficient X-ray shielding in medical, aviation, and nuclear applications. We demonstrate that the incorporation of a surfactant facilitates uniform dispersion of BiI nanoparticles within the PE-BNNs matrix, significantly enhancing shielding performance. The surfactant-assisted film achieved 82.13% X-ray shielding efficiency, a substantial improvement over the 65.74% of the film without surfactant. We quantified its linear attenuation coefficient (LAC), mass attenuation coefficient (MAC), mean free path (MFP), half value layer (HVL), and tenth value layer (TVL) at 60 kV. These findings highlight the potential of this flexible, lead-free, and lightweight material to advance high-efficiency X-ray shielding technology.
