Abstract
Diarylethene (DAE) is notable for its reversible photoisomerization between open and closed forms in response to specific wavelengths of light. Here, we demonstrate a DAE-doped liquid crystal (LC) system that exhibits clear, macroscopic optical changes for effective wavelength detection. Incorporation of DAE into the LC bulk enables light-induced isomerization of DAE, which drives LC reorientation observable by polarized optical microscopy. Specifically, when DAE is in its open form, the LC aligns planar at the water interface; upon UV irradiation, DAE switches to its closed form, inducing vertical reorientation of the LC and resulting in a distinct optical change. To elucidate the underlying mechanism, fluorescence confocal polarizing microscopy (FCPM) revealed that closed-form DAE molecules preferentially accumulate at the water interface under UV exposure.
