Abstract
Pressurized alkaline water electrolyzers (AWE) with thinner porous separators are considered an optimal design strategy, as they simultaneously enhance voltage efficiency and hydrogen storage density. However, the inherently high hydrogen permeability and low mechanical strength of state-of-art commercial separators such as Zirfon® 220 lead to hesitancy in applying the pressurized AWE system. In this study, we present a straightforward impregnation method reducing ohmic resistance and gas crossover. This innovative separator effectively reduced gas crossover by 40% without compromising overall cell performance and higher mechanical strength. Furthermore, extensive long-term experiments indicate no discernible increase in degradation rates compared to reference separators.
