Abstract

This study reports the first solvent-free synthesis of a novel covalent-frameworked 2D crown ether (C2O), composed of carbon and oxygen in a 2:1 mol ratio. The synthesized C2O contains abundant phenolic groups, similar to phlorotannins, offering strong antibacterial activity through contact-based mechanisms and excellent biocompatibility. The inherent crown ether structure of C2O facilitates efficient metal adsorption, enabling easy preparation of copper-embedded C2O (Cu@C2O). Cu@C2O exhibits significantly enhanced antibacterial effects at lower concentrations compared to pristine C2O. Polylactic acid (PLA) nanocomposites incorporating 0.1 wt% C2O show 99.99% antibacterial efficacy, which improves further by reducing filler content to 0.03 wt% when using Cu@C2O. Due to their durable antibacterial performance and biocompatibility, these materials are promising for biomedical, packaging, and antifouling applications.
