Abstract
Sample pretreatment, such as liquid-liquid extraction (LLE), is essential for analyzing complex samples containing interferents. However, LLE requires large amounts of organic solvents, causing environmental and health. Liquid-liquid microextraction (LLME) offers cost-effective and rapid enrichment due to low solvent use and high surface area-to-volume ratio. Nevertheless, LLME has drawbacks like analyte loss during extra removal steps when solid particles are present. To address this, we designed a microfluidic device enabling direct extraction and retrieval of analytes from slurry samples without further preparation. The extractant, 1-octanol, confined in a microchamber, contacts the flowing sample in the main channel and rapidly extracts model analytes—Nile Red (NR), carbamazepine (CBZ), and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). This system enables selective analysis of various aquatic samples without conventional pretreatment.
