Abstract
Dimethyl furandicarboxylate (DMFD) is a biomass-derived monomer with a rigid aromatic ring structure similar to terephthalic acid, making it suitable for synthesizing polyesters and polyamides. Yet the effect of subtle diol variations on DMFD-based polymer properties is scarcely studied. In this study, two furanoate polyesters, poly(propylene furanoate) (PPF) and poly(neopentyl furanoate) (PNF), were synthesized to assess how differences between 1,3-propanediol and neopentyl glycol influence crystallinity and mechanical behavior. PPF and PNF showed Young’s modulus values of 2.5 and 3.0 GPa and tensile strengths of 100.7 and 98.0 MPa. After optimized annealing, Young’s modulus increased to 3.4 and 3.6 GPa and tensile strengths rose to 112.6 and 121.4 MPa. These findings demonstrate that even slight diol structural differences can strongly affect crystalline morphology and mechanical performance, offering valuable insights for designing high‑performance bio‑based polymers.
