Abstract

Silicon is a promising anode material for next-generation lithium-ion batteries due to its high capacity (~4200 mAh/g), but its volume change during cycling causes mechanical failure and unstable SEI formation. To address this, we developed a binder based on ionic interactions between amine-modified silicon and bottlebrush poly(acrylic acid) (BBP-PAA). BBP-PAA was synthesized via grafting-through polymerization using ATRP and ROMP of poly(tert-butyl acrylate) macromonomers, followed by deprotection. This architecture improves processability and exposes dense carboxylic acid groups. Amine groups were introduced on silicon via silanization with (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane, confirmed by FT-IR and TGA. Electrochemical tests showed that modified silicon electrodes had enhanced capacity retention and stability. These results suggest that ionic interactions between NH3+ and COO- enhance adhesion and enable self-healing behavior of the binder.
