Abstract
Cattle manure, a widely available agricultural waste, is a sustainable and low-cost precursor for hard carbon due to its high carbon and lignocellulosic content. Biomass-derived hard carbon is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) owing to its porous structure and enhanced Li⁺ diffusion. In this study, porous hard carbon was synthesized from cattle manure via a simple ZnCl₂-assisted activation and pyrolysis process. This method addresses the limitations of graphite anodes, such as low capacity and slow charging, by introducing a porous structure with large surface area. The activated and carbonized manure-derived anode (APCM) delivers a higher initial capacity than graphite and shows excellent cycling stability, retaining 364.09 mAh/g after 500 cycles at 0.1 A/g. It also demonstrates outstanding rate capability up to 5 A/g. These results show that ZnCl₂-activated cattle manure is a promising and sustainable material for next-generation LIB anodes.
