Abstract
Cellulose-based solid polymer electrolytes (CSE) have emerged as promising materials for cost-effective all-solid-state batteries due to their mechanical robustness, thermal resistance, and inherent polar functionalities. However, its dense hydrogen-bonding network restricts intermolecular spacing and limits Li⁺ transport, requiring molecular-level structural engineering.
To address this limitation, we functionalized cellulose with citric acid to simultaneously disrupt hydrogen bonding and introduce a high density of carboxyl groups capable of coordinating with Li⁺. This molecular design allows investigation into how polar group density and intermolecular chain spacing influence Li⁺ hopping transport. By varying the degree of esterification, we modulate the number of active coordination sites and analyze their effect on ionic conductivity and Li⁺ transference. Our results reveal a correlation between carboxyl group density and formation of efficient Li⁺ transport channels in CSE
