Abstract

Electro-adhesion’s reversible and programmable nature enables various robotic applications.  In particular, the junction between two polyelectrolytes offers a promising approach to reversibly modulate adhesion at remarkably low voltages under 10 V - significantly lower than the kV-range voltages typically needed for conventional dielectric electroadhesives. The core mechanisms governing this system involve electrostatic interactions among ionic polymer chains and the formation of molecular-level complexes at the interface. However, these forces are difficult to isolate, as adhesion behavior is also influenced by the viscoelastic nature of the material. Furthermore, existing theoretical models fall short of fully explaining how these interfacial complexes contribute to adhesion. To address this gap, this study investigates the energetic contribution of such complexes to electro-adhesion, specifically by using contact adhesion test designed to minimize the effects of viscoelasticity.
