Abstract
Electrochemical CO₂ reduction (CO₂R) is a promising strategy for producing value-added chemicals from renewable energy. While ionomers have traditionally served as binder components for catalysts, recent studies reveal their critical role in modulating product selectivity by altering the electrode microenvironment. However, the structural diversity of commercial ionomers, in terms of backbone and functional groups, hampers a clear understanding of structure–selectivity relationships. This study uses a polyampholyte ionomer to investigate such structure-driven selectivity variations. The cationic component was designed to promote C₂⁺ product formation in CO₂R, and the anionic counterpart incorporated a functional group to tune hydrophobicity. By varying the monomer ratio, the overall ionic charge of the ionomer was systematically controlled, and the corresponding impact on product selectivity was evaluated.
