Advanced Functional Separators for Long-Life, Self-Recovering Thin Lithium Metal Batteries

Abstract

With the growth of the EV market, thin Li metal anodes are explored for high energy density but suffer from limited Li sources and unstable SEI, causing capacity fade. To address this, LiFSI salt was coated on commercial separators, creating a localized high-concentration environment at the electrode interface. The coating dissolves during cycling, replenishing Li ions, reducing free solvent, and forming a stable LiF-rich SEI, enhancing mechanical and electrochemical stability. In Li||Li symmetric cells with 1M LiFSI/DME  electrolyte, the salt-coated separator (SDL) showed lower polarization and improved cycle life compared to PE separators. SDL reduced nucleation overpotential and increased exchange current density improving interfacial kinetics. High-rate tests confirmed better capacity at 5C. SEM revealed dense Li deposition without dendrites in SDL. Thin Li metal half-cells with SDL maintained stable cycling over 250 cycles.
