Abstract
The development of sustainable hydrogen production technologies is vital for a low-carbon economy. Among these, the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in water electrolysis plays a key role in generating green hydrogen. While platinum-based catalysts are highly effective for HER, their high cost drives the search for alternatives. Rhenium has recently emerged as a promising, cost-effective candidate, offering electrocatalytic performance comparable to platinum group metals. In addition to its electrochemical potential, rhenium-based nanocatalysts demonstrate excellent thermal catalytic activity, particularly in the rapid and selective decomposition of nitrogen hydrides to produce pure H₂ and N₂.
