Neuromorphic Artificial Synapses Enabled by Glycol-Modified through Copolymerization

Abstract

Electrolyte-gated organic synaptic transistor (EGOST) uses polymers as channel layers, so it is important to control the properties of the polymers. However, polymers with alkyl chains have low ionic reactivity, limiting their ability to implement synaptic plasticity. Therefore, glycol groups are being studied widely with polarity and strong ion interactions enable them to achieve non-volatile properties. Despite this, systematic studies on the effects of glycol group copolymerizing has not been lacking. In this study, we propose a strategy to enhance synaptic properties by introducing glycolated monomers into alkyl-based polymers via copolymerization. The results showed that synaptic properties could be achieved by enhanced doping to the channel through copolymerization. Based on LTP/D properties, high accuracy was achieved in ANN-based recognition. This study provides a new way for neuromorphic computing by implementing synaptic device with glycol introduction via copolymerization.
