Improving Nonvolatile via Nanoweb Structuring of Organic Artificial Synapses

Abstract

Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) are suitable for use as artificial synapses to mimic various neural funcions. However, to improve the nonvolatile properties required for functional mimicry, it is important to enhance the interaction between the channel and ions. Various approaches have been attempted, but most rely on specific molecular structures or dopant chemistries, necessitating more universal and scalable method. Here, we precisely controlled ion interactions and doping efficiency in artificial synapses by modulating surface morphology via foaming-assisted nanoweb structuring. The nanoweb-structured channels induced rapid ion penetration and effectively suppressed back-diffusion. These allowed us to maintain more nonvolatile current and enable linear conductance modulation. These findings highlight the impact of channel morphology modulation on synaptic properties and provide an optimized design strategy for artificial synapses.
