Abstract

Nano islands are of interest in sensing and catalysis due to their excellent optical properties, high surface area, and chemical stability. However, conventional deposition methods have limitations in forming uniform nano island structures on curved or irregular surfaces.
To overcome this, we propose a transfer method in which a metal thin film is deposited onto PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) and then transferred to target substrates. Plasma treatment is applied to modulate the interfacial work of adhesion between the metal-deposited PDMS and the substrate, enabling reliable and efficient transfer.
This method allows metal films to be transferred onto various substrates such as glass, PET, and PDMS, as well as curved or non-planar surfaces where direct deposition is challenging. It is effective regardless of the metal type (e.g., Au, Ag, Cu) or film thickness. The resulting nano island structures retain their morphology and can be stacked in multiple layers to increase surface area. These features enable potential applications in areas such as catalysis and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS).
