Multi-Silane Functionalization of Energetic Materials for Next-Generation Hypersonic Fuel Systems

Abstract

Novel silane-coated boron nanoparticles (BNs) with controlled polymeric networks are developed as energetic nanoadditives for scramjet engines. A dropwise silylation method facilitates uniform, dense polymeric silane networks through precise hydrolysis and condensation reactions, whereas rapid injection yields irregular, low-density coatings. Optimized dropwise-coated reduced boron nanoparticles (DrBNOs) exhibit significantly enhanced dispersion stability in hydrocarbon-based nanofluids, demonstrating excellent compatibility with hydrocarbon fuels. The optimized silane coatings improve oxidation resistance, facilitating rapid ignition, complete combustion, and increased combustion efficiency. Bomb calorimetry and droplet combustion analyses confirm high calorific values and minimal soot formation, highlighting precise spatial control as essential for advanced scramjet fuel additives.
