Synthesis of Pt-Coated Black Double-Shell Hollow TiO2 Nanoparticles Via One-Step Reduction Methods

Abstract

In this study, Pt-coated black double-shell hollow TiO2 nanoparticles (Pt/BDS-HNPs) are synthesized via a novel one-step co-reduction process of TiO2 and Pt precursors. In specific, double-shell hollow TiO2 nanoparticles (DS-HNPs) are synthesized by sequential methods of sol-gel assisted by the polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) surface modification and ammonia etching. Subsequently, DS-HNPs are mixed with sodium borohydride and platinum(II) acetylacetonate as reducing agent and Pt precursor, and placed in the tube furnace for thermal treatment. This novel one-step reduction method successfully converted white TiO2 into black TiO2 while simultaneously depositing a Pt coating. Finally, Pt/BDS-HNPs demonstrated excellent photocatalytic activity toward various organic dyes, owing to their enlarged specific surface area from the double-shell morphology and enhanced charge separation by Pt decoration.
