Abstract

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is widely used in packaging, textiles, and medical devices. To address concerns about disease transmission, we developed an antimicrobial PET by covalently bonding sulfonamide-based compounds onto its surface. Unlike traditional PET modified with physically blended metals, which suffer from poor washing durability, our method ensures strong interfacial stability. Sulfonamide-derived monomers were synthesized in a single step and grafted onto PET using a photo-induced process. First, tertiary amines were introduced onto PET via aminolysis to act as type II photoinitiators. UV irradiation with benzophenone then enabled grafting of the monomers. FT-IR confirmed sulfonamide incorporation, and the resulting homopolymer showed 99% antibacterial activity.
