Achieving Reliable Synthesis of Conjugated Polymers Using a Continuous Flow Reactor

Abstract
Donor–acceptor (D–A) conjugated polymers offer excellent electronic and photonic properties, yet their synthesis remains a barrier to commercialization. Continuous flow synthesis is a promising scalable alternative, but its application has been limited. Here, we report the flow synthesis of six D–A polymers using a continuous reactor. By varying reaction parameters, we examined effects on polymerization and quality. p-type, n-type, and ambipolar polymers were synthesized under unified conditions, with only reaction time requiring adjustment. Compared to batch synthesis, the flow method gave similar or higher degree of polymerization, higher yields, and much shorter reaction times. The polymers showed high quality in both material properties and transistor performance. These results highlight flow synthesis as an efficient route for producing D–A conjugated polymers.
