Abstract

Polyimides are high-performance polymers with excellent thermal and chemical stability, making them suitable for membrane-based gas separation. Incorporating polar groups into the backbone enhances interchain interactions and packing density, improving gas selectivity. In particular, hydroxyl groups facilitate hydrogen bonding and charge transfer complex (CTC) formation, increasing packing density. In this study, a hydroxyl-functionalized dianhydride and diamine were synthesized and polymerized via polycondensation to prepare a novel polyimide membrane. The chemical structures of the monomers and resulting polyimide were confirmed by NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy. Thermal stability of the polyimide was evaluated by DSC and TGA analysis. Chain packing characteristics were investigated through free volume and porosity analysis. In this regard, we observed the potential for enhanced hydrogen separation performance and applicability in next-generation hydrogen separation membranes.
