Abstract
The rapid advancement of wearable sensing and interfacing electronics brings growing challenges in achieving sustainability and energy autonomy. The long-term and reliable operation of these autonomous systems depends on the smart integration of energy harvesting and storage modules, along with their control and regulation circuits. However, current self-powered wearable systems often lack system-level energy management strategies, which limits their efficiency, reliability, and practicality. Reframing these technologies through the lens of wearable microgrids offers a new perspective for developing reliable, energy-efficient systems. By strategically integrating distributed on-body energy harvesters with energy storage components and decentralized hierarchical control, continuous and sustainable device operation becomes feasible. This work presents a vision for wearable microgrids based on application-specific, performance-matched combinations of harvesters and storage elements.
