Abstract

Herein, we present the design and synthesis of novel asymmetric supercapacitor electrodes based on carbon nanofibers (CNFs) embedded with metal oxides (SnO2, Fe2O3) and further coated with polypyrrole (PPy) as protective and additional pseudocapacitive layer. Firstly, CNFs are fabricated by electrospinning polyacrylonitrile precursors followed by carbonization, and then metal oxides are embedded onto the surface by a hydrothermal treatment. Finally, uniform PPy layer is coated by the dispersion polymerization under static conditions. The resulting SnO2-CNF@PPy- and Fe2O3-CNF@PPy-based electrodes showed outstanding capacitances of 506.7 and 425.9 F g−1 due to the synergistic effect of high electrical conductance, pseudo-capacitance and stable structural integrity provided from the hierarchical application of CNFs, metal oxides, and PPy. Two electrodes are assembled as an asymmetric supercapacitor device with excellent capacitance (100.7 F g−1) and superior cycling stability.
