Abstract
Hollow titania nanospheres (HTNS) functionalized with various conducting polymers (CPs) were synthesized as the dispersion materials for ER fluids. HTNS were fabricated by depositing titania shells onto silica core through sol–gel method, followed by removing the core using sonication-mediated etching with ammonia solution. Subsequently, various conducting polymers including polythiophene, polypyrrole, and polyaniline were coated onto HTNS by vapor deposition polymerization to attain HTNS-CPs. And then, various HTNS-CPs were dispersed in silicone oil (3.0 wt%) to formulate ER fluids. Among them, polythiophene-coated HTNS-based ER fluid showed the highest ER performance due to the enhanced polarizability induced by intrinsic electronic structure of polythiophene. Accordingly, additional charge carrier provided by CPs have significantly increased the polarizability of metal oxide employed in ER fluids.
