Abstract

In this study, hierarchical black double-shell nanoparticles (HBDS NPs) with superb near-infrared (NIR) reflectance are synthesized to improve LiDAR sensor recognition in autonomous driving systems. The HBDS NPs are fabricated through sequential processes involving titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP) sol-gel synthesis, sodium borohydride (NaBH4) reduction, and ammonia (NH4OH) etching. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is employed as an interfacial agent to ensure robust adhesion between the titania shells and silica cores, creating stable double-shell architectures. And then, HBDS NPs are integrated into hydrophilic varnish and spray-coated onto various substrates. As a result, the HBDS NP-based coatings applied objects exhibit outstanding NIR reflectance (~40.6 R%) while maintaining excellent black coloration, verified by colorimeter. Importantly, practical LiDAR detection performance of objects coated with HBDS NPs are significantly enhanced, comparable to the white objects. These results suggest that HBDS NP coatings represent a viable solution for advanced, safety-focused coatings in autonomous vehicles.
