Abstract

Cellulose, Earth’s most abundant biopolymer, offers a sustainable platform for functional materials. This study proposes a unified strategy to create superhydrophobic (SHP) and antibacterial cellulose-based materials, from nanofiber coatings to textiles. Lyophilized cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) undergo green mechanochemical esterification with fatty acids, enhancing reactivity without toxic solvents. Oleic acid-modified CNFs yield SHP coatings with exfoliation-based renewability, suitable for moisture barriers and water harvesting. Scaling up, cotton textiles are esterified and impregnated with copper ions, producing fluorine-free, particle-free SHP-antibacterial fabrics. These maintain SHP after washing and show >99% bacterial reduction, demonstrating sustainable, scalable potential for real-world use.
