Versatile and Instructive Potentials of MXene Nanomaterials for Tissue Engineering & Regeneration

Abstract

We investigated the biological potentials of MXene nanomaterials (NMs) for tissue engineering and regeneration. MXene (transition metal carbides/nitrides) are accordion-like multilayered or monolayered two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets exhibiting excellent electrical, optical, and magnetic properties with biocompatibility. Interestingly, MXene NMs can interact with various biomolecules and proteins, and directly interact with cells to modulate cellular behaviors and differentiation. In light of this, we introduced three types of MXene-incorporated engineered scaffolds: Electrospun nanofiber matrices for bone regeneration; nanofiber matrices and three-dimensional (3D) bioprinted grafts for muscle regeneration. We also delved into the applications of various 2D NMs in tissue engineering, highlighting their unique advantages over conventional approaches and presenting them as emerging strategies in regenerative medicine.
