Abstract

We investigated the crystallization kinetics and large strain network failure behavior in polypropylenes of different molecular weight and distribution. It turns out that the kinetics of the crystallization in polypropylene strongly rely on the number average molecular weight. The ratio between the radius of gyration of the molecular chain coil and the long spacing of the crystalline lamellae is found to be a key factor that determines the crystallization kinetics. Furthermore, the critical stress that initiates the failure of the oriented network during stretching to a large deformation beyond strain hardening was found to scale with the weight average molecular weight. The results thus provide promising possibilities to design polypropylene materials via tuning molecular weight and distribution.
