Epitaxial Crystallization-Driven Self-Assembly of Block Copolymers with Asymmetric Stereoblock Polylactides into 3‑D Triangular Prisms

Crystallization-driven self-assembly (CDSA) of block copolymers (BCPs) containing crystallizable cores typically yields low-dimensional nanostructures, such as 1D nanowires and 2D platlets, due to surface passivation by solvent-soluble blocks. Here, we report the formation of 3D triangular prisms via epitaxial CDSA of an asymmetric stereoblock polylactides, specifically [(D-lactide)32-(L-lactide)16]-b-PEG45. Programmed chain folding of the [DLA32-LL16] block via intramolecular stereocomplexation expoeses excess [DLA16] domains on the top and bottom surfaces of the crystalline core. These exposed domains act as nucleation sites for the epitaxial growth of triangular cores into prisms exceeding 600 nm in thickness. We demonstrate that the concentration-dependent kinetics of chain folding and crystallization of asymmetric stereoblock polylactide are critical factors enabling this epitaxial CDSA.
