We designed eco-friendly, photo-switchable smart adhesives based on biomass-derived copolymers containing acid azobenzene functionalities. A tetrahydrogeraniol methacrylate monomer (TGMM) derived from rose oil was copolymerized with an acid azobenzene-based methacrylate (AAMM) to yield sustainable adhesives exhibiting strong adhesion to metals, plastics, and rubber. Reversible photoisomerization of azobenzene enables dynamic modulation of adhesion strength under UV and visible light. The adhesive shows excellent reusability through light, thermal, and solvent treatments with high adhesion recovery. A smart UV sensor was further demonstrated using photo-switchable adhesion as a light-controlled electrical switch. These results highlight the potential of biomass-based photoresponsive adhesives for sustainable smart sensing and advanced adhesive applications.
