Synthesis of Carboxyl-Functionalized PI-TPU/Ionic Liquid Composites for Flexible Iontronic Pressure Sensors

Abstract

Wearable healthcare devices require flexible sensing materials combining mechanical compliance, ionic conductivity, and biocompatibility. Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) is flexible but poorly compatible with ionic liquids (ILs) due to low polarity, limiting its iontronic use. Here, polyisoprene-based TPU (PI-TPU) was modified via thiol-ene click chemistry with 3-mercaptopropionic acid (3-MPA) to introduce carboxylic acid groups, yielding Clicked-TPU (C-TPU). Polyisoprene was converted to hydroxyl-telechelic polyisoprene (HTPI) as the PI-TPU soft-segment precursor; FT-IR confirmed 53.2% hydrogen-bonded carbonyls in PI-TPU. C-TPU showed markedly increased hydrogen bonding and tensile strength above 20 MPa. Blended with [BMIM][PF6], C-TPU formed more homogeneous films than PI-TPU, reflecting greater matrix polarity and crosslink density. These results establish C-TPU/IL as a promising active layer for flexible iontronic pressure sensors.
