Hydroxyl-Functionalized Dianhydride-Based Polyimide Membranes for Hydrogen Purification

Abstract
Membrane-based hydrogen purification requires advanced polymer materials with controlled chain packing and stable thermal properties. To address this, a novel hydroxyl-functionalized polyimide (PI) was prepared from a hydroxyl-functionalized dianhydride and a carefully selected diamine via step-growth polycondensation. The synthesized monomers and resulting PI were characterized by NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy to verify their chemical structures. Thermal behavior was analyzed using DSC and TGA, confirming excellent heat stability. The packing-related microstructure was examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), with particular attention to changes in the amorphous halo and the derived d-spacing, which reflects the average interchain distance. Gas transport performance was evaluated using permeability and ideal selectivity (e.g., H₂/N₂) as key parameters. Ultimately, these findings show that hydroxyl-functionalized PI membranes provide a useful platform for correlating intermolecular interactions, chain packing, and gas-transport behavior in advanced hydrogen purification applications.
