Preparation of Hydrophobic Silicone and Hydrophilic Acrylic Hybrid Materials via Electron Beam Irradiation for Medical Adhesives

Abstract
Silicone- and acrylic-based medical adhesives, widely used in transdermal drug delivery systems (TDDS), have intrinsic limitations. Silicone-based systems exhibit excellent biocompatibility but suffer from poor loading and release efficiencies for hydrophilic drugs, while acrylic-based systems offer superior drug loading capacity but cause skin irritation. Simply blending these materials causes severe phase separation, and conventional thermal/UV curing leads to drug degradation and toxicity due to residual catalysts or photoinitiators. In this study, to overcome these challenges, new types of silicone-acrylic hybrid polymers were synthesized via initiator- and catalyst-free electron beam irradiation. The properties and performance of the synthesized silicone-acrylic hybrid polymers were analyzed by various methods. This was supported by Korea National University of Transportation in 2026.
