Abstract

Photoelectrochemical water splitting using photoelectrodes offers a promising pathway for H2 production. Among candidate materials, conjugated polymers have garnered significant interest due to their low toxicity, chemical tunability, and large-area processability. However, the operation in aqueous environments presents distinct challenges. Here, dual interface and surface modifications are introduced to enhance performance and stability. First, the detrimental role of ITO surface hydroxyl groups is identified, which degrades the stability. Then, a chemical modifier is employed to effectively release H2 bubbles and improve photovoltage. These modifications provide a robust framework for the application of organic photoelectrodes in solar-to-fuel conversion.
