Design of Ferulic Acid-Derived Liquid Crystalline Epoxy Resins

Abstract

As sustainable materials gain increasing attention, biomass-derived epoxy resins have emerged as promising alternatives to petroleum-based thermosets. However, their limited fundamental properties remain a challenge, which we address by utilizing the self-assembling characteristics of liquid crystals. In this study, a novel Ferulic acid-derived liquid crystalline epoxy resin (F-LCER) monomer was synthesized through esterification of the phenolic hydroxyl group and the unsaturated carboxylic acid moiety, introducing dynamic covalent bonds into the crosslinked network. A rigid biphenyl glycidyl ether unit was incorporated to promote liquid-crystalline ordering through π–π stacking interactions. During curing, this self-assembling molecular structure aligns to form an oriented network, enhancing various properties while enabling excellent reprocessability through transesterification exchange reactions.
