Photodegradable Poly(caprolactone-co-urethane)s for Dual-Tone Photoimaging Materials

Abstract
Recently, the use of a variety of polymeric materials have been regulated due to their environmental issues in various fields including nano and biotechnologies, electrical applications, and micro/nanofabrications. Herein, a photo- and bio-degradable eco-friendly polyurethane (PU) was synthesized using a photocleavable ortho-nitrobenzyl moiety (oNB) and a biodegradable caprolactone, further applied to a photolithography. When photopatterning was performed using the reaction of oNB by UV light, a positive-tone pattern was formed in low light energy range; however, a negative-tone pattern was also possible when UV light with higher energy was irradiated. The unique photomodulation behavior of the solubility was explored by quantification of Hansen solubility parameters and surface energy. Photo-induced chemical changes and mechanisms were elucidated using size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and spectroscopic tools. This study does not only demonstrate the feasibility of synthesizing eco-friendly photopatterning materials, but also verify the physicochemical properties and behaviors upon the illumination of UV light, highlighting the possibility to open new types of photo- and bio-degradable polymeric materials.
