After publication, the authors informed the journal that the experiments could not be repeated because of unknown contamination of the injection medium that had occurred during their research. This renders the conclusions of the article invalid. Yang Yu, Qi-Gai Yin and Hui Yu agree to this retraction. Figures 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11 (lower panel), 11 (upper right graph), 12, 13, 14 of the article showed potential overlap with Figs. 7, 8, 9, 10, 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 12, 11 and 13 of [1] respectively. The Editor-in-Chief has retracted this article after concerns were raised about some of the data reported. The journal was initially contacted by the Authors, who expressed concern about their reliance on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging to characterize the degrees of separation of the different proton-exchange membranes presented in this article. Upon further investigation by the Publisher, areas of apparent overlap were identified both within and between several panels of Fig. 5, which shows TEM data, and Fig. 6, which shows AFM data. The Authors were unable to provide the raw image files for these figures upon request by the Publisher. The Editor-in-Chief therefore no longer has confidence in the reliability of this article.
